Privacy Policy
Last updated: 18 August 2026
This policy explains what personal data GenCharts collects, why, and what your rights are. It covers visitors to the public site, people who request access, and signed-in users.
Who we are
GenCharts is operated by Energy Context Ltd ("we", "us"), a company
registered in England and Wales (company number 15274257, registered
office The Ducth Barn, Bremhill Grove Farm, East Tytherton, Chippenham, Wiltshire SN15 4LX). We are the data controller for the personal data
described here and are registered with the UK Information Commissioner's Office
(ICO registration ZB837245).
For any privacy question or to exercise your rights, contact us at support@gencharts.co.uk.
What we collect, why, and our lawful basis
Visitors to the public site
- Analytics. We use Plausible, a privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics tool, to understand aggregate traffic (pages viewed, referrers, country). It sets no cookies, collects no personal data, and does not track you across other sites. Lawful basis: legitimate interest in understanding how the site is used.
- Server logs. Our hosting provider records standard request logs, which include IP addresses, for security and operation of the service. Lawful basis: legitimate interest in keeping the service secure and available.
People who request access (/get-access)
When you complete the access-request form we collect your first name, last name, email address, company, role, and anything you write in the two free-text fields. We use this to respond to your request, set up access, and, as described under Marketing below, to send you occasional product and market updates. Lawful basis: legitimate interest in responding to a business enquiry and marketing a relevant B2B service to you.
Signed-in users
To provide the service to account holders we hold your name, email, company, access roles and subscription details. Lawful basis: performance of a contract (for subscribers) or legitimate interest (for free accounts) in providing the product you have signed in to use.
Product usage
For signed-in users we log page views to our own database to understand which features are used. This is first-party and is not shared. Lawful basis: legitimate interest in improving the product.
Marketing
We may send you product updates and market analysis by email, using Mailchimp as our email platform, and we may occasionally email you directly. Lawful basis: legitimate interest in marketing a relevant B2B service. Every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can opt out at any time by using it or by emailing support@gencharts.co.uk. Opting out of marketing does not affect your account or access.
Cookies and browser storage
We keep this deliberately minimal, so we do not show a cookie consent banner. We do not use any cookies or storage that require consent:
- One strictly-necessary cookie: a session cookie that keeps you signed in. It is essential to the login you have requested and is exempt from consent requirements.
- Functional browser storage: we use your browser's session storage to remember your on-page selections (for example, the date you have chosen) as you move between pages. It is cleared when you close the tab, is not used to track you, and is never shared.
- Cookieless analytics: Plausible, as described above, sets no cookies.
We use no advertising, retargeting or cross-site tracking technologies.
Who we share data with (processors)
We use a small number of service providers who process personal data on our behalf under contract:
| Provider | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Render | Application hosting (processes request IPs) |
| Postmark | Sending transactional email (e.g. sign-in links) |
| Mailchimp | Sending marketing email |
| Plausible | Cookieless website analytics |
| CARTO / map tile providers | Serving basemap tiles on our interactive maps (signed-in pages only) |
We do not sell your personal data.
International transfers
Some of our processors are located outside the UK/EEA, notably in the United States. Where personal data is transferred internationally, it is protected by appropriate safeguards: the UK extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework where the provider is certified (Mailchimp (Intuit Inc.) is DPF-certified), or Standard Contractual Clauses / the UK International Data Transfer Agreement where it is not.
How long we keep it
| Data | Retention |
|---|---|
Access-request (/get-access) details |
24 months from our last contact with you, then reviewed and deleted |
| Account data | For the life of your account, and a short period after closure |
| Product-usage logs | 14 months |
| Analytics (Plausible) | Aggregate only; no personal data retained |
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to access, correct, delete, or port your personal data, to object to or restrict processing, and to withdraw consent or opt out of marketing at any time. To exercise any of these, email support@gencharts.co.uk.
You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk) if you believe we have handled your data improperly, though we would appreciate the chance to resolve it first.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The "last updated" date at the top shows when it last changed.
